How it works

Your learning journey, in 3D

Step 1 of 6

Onboarding

    1. Onboarding

Tell Fluent what you want: one main goal and up to two others, your starting level, and how many minutes a day you can give. No account, no sign-up.

      • 7 goals: confidence, pronunciation, fluency, vocabulary, conversation, interviews, professional
      • Goal split: main goal leads about 60% of practice
      • Daily time 5, 10 or 15 minutes
    2. Baseline assessment

A short starting checkpoint (read aloud, listen-and-repeat, a gap, a scenario, a topic) measures where you really are across eight skill areas.

      • Fixed format so later results are comparable
      • Scores sounds, rhythm, fluency, vocabulary, grammar, structure, politeness, delivery
      • Takes a few minutes; heart-free
    3. Personalised skill path

Four units, from Social to Public Speaking, ordered by level and difficulty. You enter at your level, and every pass unlocks the next lesson.

      • Social, Casual, Professional and Public Speaking units
      • 780 lessons across 5 levels
      • Pass mark 60 unlocks the next lesson
    4. Daily practice loop

Each day Fluent builds a short session: word, sentence, fill the gap, shadowing, then open speaking, with spaced reviews of what you found hard.

      • Listen, record, get word-level feedback in seconds
      • Spaced review brings weak items back
      • Daily target grows 1 minute per streak day up to your limit
    5. Checkpoints

At weeks 0, 4, 8 and 12 you retake the same kind of test. Different content, same structure, so you can see real change in each skill strand.

      • Four checkpoints, 4 weeks apart
      • Band fixed at your first test
      • Strand-by-strand score history
    6. Progress & gamification

XP, levels, a streak with a weekly freeze, and hearts that regenerate, so progress feels good without punishing a bad day.

      • XP for every honest attempt, never near zero
      • One missed day can be covered by a streak freeze
      • Charts for minutes practised and skill areas

    Scoring & privacy

Deterministic scoring, computed on your device

The same speech always gets the same score. No cloud AI, no hidden model, no token costs.

Fluency blends pace (best at 110–155 words per minute), pause control, filler control and accuracy. Single-word drills skip pace entirely.

    Built to stay private

No accounts, no analytics, no servers. Your profile, scores and practice history stay on your phone or Mac, and audio is never saved.

A precise note on speech recognition. Speech-to-text is done by your device's speech service. On Mac, Fluent asks for on-device recognition; otherwise macOS may use Apple's servers. On Android, the device's recognition service decides, and works offline once the English speech pack is installed. Details in the Privacy Policy.

    FAQ

    Questions, answered

Which devices does Fluent run on?

Android phones and tablets (Android 7.0 or later, free on Google Play) Versions for Mac (macOS 14 or later, Apple silicon and Intel), iPhone and iPad are coming soon to the App Store; there is no direct Mac download.

    Is there an Android app?

Yes. Fluent for Android is available free on Google Play. It covers all five levels, Beginner to Advanced, with the same six exercise types and a baseline assessment that places you.

    Why is Android free?

Fluent for Android is offered free on Google Play, with every level included and no in-app purchases. On Apple platforms, Beginner and Elementary are free and the optional Fluent Pro unlock covers the higher levels.

    Is Fluent really private?

Fluent has no accounts, no analytics and no servers of its own. Your profile, scores and practice history stay on your device. The Android app requests only the microphone permission and has no internet permission. On Apple platforms the optional Fluent Pro purchase is handled entirely by Apple. The one step outside Fluent's control is speech-to-text (see the next question).

Does speech recognition happen on my device?

Fluent uses the speech recognition built into your device. On a Mac, Fluent asks macOS to recognise speech on-device whenever it can; otherwise macOS may send audio to Apple under Apple's policies. On Android, the device's recognition service (Google's on most phones) decides whether to process speech on-device or over the network; with the English offline speech pack installed it can work fully offline.

Is my voice recorded or saved?

No. Audio is used only while you are recording and is turned into text by your device's speech service. Fluent never writes your audio to a file. Only the resulting text and scores are saved, on your device.

What do I need to run it?

Android: Android 7.0 or later, a microphone and the device's speech recognition and text-to-speech engines. Mac (coming soon to the Mac App Store): macOS 14 Sonoma or later on Apple silicon or Intel and a microphone. On Apple platforms you can also type an answer instead of speaking.

When will the Mac, iPhone and iPad apps be available?

They are coming soon, and will be available only from the App Store. They will be free to install, with the optional one-time Fluent Pro unlock. This page will link to them when they launch.

    How is my score calculated?

On your device with fixed rules: word alignment against the target text, pace in words per minute, pause and filler counts, and recognition confidence. The same speech always gets the same score. There is no AI model and no cloud scoring.

    What is Fluent Pro?

An optional one-time $9.99 in-app purchase (prices vary by country) for the App Store versions of Fluent on Apple platforms. It unlocks Intermediate, Upper Intermediate and Advanced lessons, all four checkpoints, detailed skill reports and attempt history, and backup and restore. It is not a subscription. The Android app has no in-app purchases.

Do I pay again on another Apple device?

Fluent Pro is tied to your Apple ID. If the same App Store app is installed on another device signed in with that Apple ID, use Restore Purchases there. Whether one purchase covers both iPhone/iPad and Mac will be confirmed on this page when the App Store versions launch.

    How do refunds work?

Apple processes all Fluent Pro payments. To request a refund, go to reportaproblem.apple.com; Apple decides refunds under its terms. The Android app is free, so there is nothing to refund.

Does progress sync between Android and Mac?

No. Each device keeps its own local history. On Apple platforms, Fluent Pro will include export and import of a backup file.
